Can books really change your life? Isn’t it an overused phrase in the modern world?
It’s not wrong if you think like that.
The rate of new self-help books being published is astonishingly higher than a few decades back. Suddenly, everyone is an author and everyone has something that helps you transform yourself.
I didn’t read these books one after another. They came to me across a decade, each one during a different phase of my life.
I don’t read a ton of self-help books because I don’t believe in hoarding information. What’s the point of reading a ton of books and not applying what it says in real life?
So, when I say these are good books, it’s because I have read them and found if not everything, at least some parts helpful.
They made a real difference in my life. You must be familiar with most of the books here. Almost everything is in everyone’s list. They’re here too, for a reason.
I won’t give you generic fluff. I’ll tell you precisely why you should read each one.

1. Deep Work by Cal Newport

What Deep Work Taught Me
There was a phase in my life when I was hooked to productivity content. I consumed it like it was oxygen.
Deep Work popped up everywhere so I decided to give it a try.
Also, the idea that 90 minutes of deep work can beat many hours of work scattered throughout the day intrigued me. So, I picked it up with great enthusiasm.
âDeep work is meaningfulâ â this is what stuck with me from the book more than the techniques. When we do deep work, we enter into flow state and that results in happiness.
In this chapter, the author explores the neurological, psychological, and philosophical argument for depth. This was unexpected and I truly enjoyed it.
Can Deep Work Really Work for Everyone?
The author argues that everyone can do deep work. He even spells out how people who are forced to do shallow work at workplace can try and adopt deep work.
You will learn about shallow work and deep work and why one is better than another. The book also has many techniques such as shutdown ritual and productive meditation which you can apply even if you can’t take out 90 minutes.
The million-dollar question: Does Deep Work work? My answer is it does. It did wonders on days when I was fine and had optimal energy.
When it Didn’t Work for Me (and why)
On bad days, such as coming from home after having a horrible day at my toxic workplace, it was impossible for me to get into deep work mode. I struggled to focus.
Thatâs when I realized the importance of regulating oneâs emotions. Because if you donât control them, they will control you. And no productivity technique can help you deal with this.
So, I picked up the next book in this list.
2. Why Has Nobody Told Me This Before? By Dr. Julie Smith

Why I Picked Up This Book
What do a horrible manager and a toxic workplace do to you? You are right, it messes your mental health.
I came home angry, irritated, and annoyed. I was always in a bad mood. It started to affect my day-to-day life. Thatâs when I discovered Dr. Julie Smith.
I saw the podcast episode of hers on The Diary of a CEO and found out about the book from there. I did some research about her and found her YouTube channel. I liked the content she was putting out and decided to grab the book.
What I Actually Do From This Book
I will be honest here â I havenât finished reading the entire book. I have read the introduction and the first, second and sixth chapter of the book. These were the chapters that were important for me at the time. These were on dark places, on motivation and on emotional pain.
The introduction really pulls you into the book. She describes how the book got this title and why she decided to write this book.
One of the techniques I started to use right after reading is the square breathing â a breathing technique to calm anxiety right now. I do it when I can feel myself getting angry, annoyed, and not only when I am anxious. It has been helpful to be in sync with my body and be in present and calm down.
Why I Recommend This Book
Even if you are doing mentally and emotionally fine, I would suggest you grab this book. Because as the author describes these arenât therapy skills â these are life skills.
You know itâs important to know basic first aid so that you can treat scratches and bruises by yourself. Basic health education helps you to take care of yourself better and you donât have to run to a doctor always.
Think of the techniques in this book as first aid for mental health. Imagine how beneficial it would be if you knew how to deal with a bad mood, what to do when youâre unmotivated, stressed.
These phases will appear in your life and you will be able to overcome it better if you knew the right techniques.

3. The Things You Can See Only When You Slow Down by Haemin Sunim

When I Needed This Book The Most
I picked this up when I was working that toxic job. I just wanted something to calm me down. Found this one while I was searching for books to help me deal with this mess because quitting wasnât an option.
This is a beautifully illustrated book written by a Zen monk. This is not like regular books where it hands down techniques for you.
Why This Book Is Different
Yes, this book is divided into different chapters. And each chapter targets different aspects of oneâs life. Each chapter has an introduction and tips and universal truths in clusters of short sentences.
Some might feel like a reminder of things you know and some are going to be an eye opener and will heal your soul and mind.
This book feels like listening to a true friend who deeply cares about you giving the best advice that will genuinely help you wherever you are in life. This is the definition of this book feels like a warm hug.
It reads like a collection of gentle reminders. Not instruction, not techniques, just truths that make you pause and breathe.
This book helped me be calm. It helped me realize that none of this matters as much as I think it does.
Why This Book Feels Like A Warm Hug
This is not a book you read it and keep it back on your bookshelf. Itâs a book to be kept permanently on your night stand or on your office table so that you can access it easily whenever you need it.
This book is for everyone because itâs a collection of universal truths. But this book will be of immense help if you are going through a tough phase in life.
Before buying this book, ask yourself this question – Are you so busy fighting life that you’ve forgotten to live it? If the answer is yes, this book is definitely for you.

4. Quiet by Susan Cain

When Being an Introvert Felt Like A Problem
I am an introvert. You can imagine all the advices that I have received about the need to be more friendly and participate in more activities and what not.
I was sad at first. It felt like people were not understanding. When I was in college, that sadness turned into anger.
During a lecture one of my professors said that introverts are more prone to be anxious / depressed because they donât make many friends and prefer to stay alone.
I knew nothing was wrong with me. It was my gut feeling. But gut feeling wasnât enough to explain that nothing is wrong with me. So, I researched about introverts and it led me to watch Susan Cainâs TED talk. This eventually led me to buy this book.
How This Book Changed My Perspective
For me, nothing particularly stuck out from the book. This book reassured me that I am fine. And that introverts can be successful in this world dominated by extroverts.
This reassurance boosted my confidence. This book validated my gut feelings. I accepted my personality trait with pride.
Whenever someone comes to lecture me about the importance of being more extroverted, I tell them to educate themselves by reading this book or watching Susanâs TED talk. This research backed book is my defense against such people.
Why Every Introvert Should Read This Book
This book will be most beneficial for you if you are an introvert. You will see that being an introvert comes with its own perks but they arenât much talked about. This book will boost your confidence and you will feel seen.
That said, if you are an extrovert reading this book will help you understand introverts better. You can become a better partner, friend, or a colleague. Isnât that wonderful?

‘I don’t have time to read’ is one of the common reason for not being able to stick to reading.

5. Atomic Habits by James Clear

The Start Stop Cycle
Probably the most famous book in this list. I donât think there is anyone who havenât heard about this book.
I picked up atomic habits because I was terrible at sticking to new habits. I was stuck in a chronic loop of start-stop cycle.
I always started with the final version of the habit. For example, if I wanted to read 20 minutes a day I always started with 20 minutes of reading. And then 2 days later I would give up on it.
How The Book Helped Me
The 2-minute rule was a game changer for me.
I knew about it before but I never bothered to apply it because it felt like I wasn’t achieving anything. The concept of getting 1% better every day finally helped me understand how much of a difference doing any habit for 2 minutes can make.
Why This Book Changed How I See Progress
James Clear explains about The Valley of Disappointment – it’s a phase where you put in effort but the results aren’t starting to show yet. It is something that most of us know – results take time. But the way it is explained in this book you will most probably never question anything because itâs taking time to show the results.
This book has simple practical tips that you can start applying with very little effort and help you build good habits and break the bad ones.
The book says that if you can’t do the full version of the habit revert to 2-minute rule. But there are phases when you can’t do this also â example when you are sick, in the middle of family emergencies and many other situations.
Life acts up all the time. So, what to do in such situations aren’t mentioned here. And that felt like a drawback to me.

6. The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck by Mark Manson

Not Your Typical Self Help Book
I picked up this book because the title intrigued me. And I am glad I did it.
This book surprised me in the best way possible. Itâs not the usual self-help book. This one feels like a slap on the face â in a nice way. Some friends in life will tell you what you need to hear and not what you want to. This book is that brash but honest friend.
The Brutal Truths This Book Will Force You To Face
The tone in which the author has decided to write this book is entirely different from the regular self-help industry. It will make you take responsibility of your life and come out of your victim mentality mode.
It will make you uncomfortable to the core. This book will force you to question everything you have believed till now.
Few of the chapter names are: Happiness is a Problem, You are Not Special, The Value of Suffering. Now you can imagine that you are in for a ride.
A Book You Will Keep Coming Back To
My personal favorite chapter is Happiness is a Problem. It explains the relationship between happiness and problems in life and trust me it is one hell of a perspective shift.
This is a book that should be re-read as many times as possible until all the concepts are drilled into your mind.

7. The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen R. Covey

The Habit That Changed How I Think
This is one of the most decorated books in the self-help genre. I picked this up when I was in college. This was the time when I was fiercely interested in self-help.
My favorite chapter from the book is Habit 1 â Be Proactive. Itâs because I am an overthinker. I spend a lot of time ruminating over things I have no control over.
Why This Book Is a Must Read
The idea of being proactive and choosing to work on things you have control over was helpful for me. These are simple things that many of us know already. But sometimes simple things explain things a certain way, something we already know suddenly clicks and it gets cemented in.
This is what this book did to me. Many of the things might be known to you if you have spent time in the self-help world. But I still recommend you to read this book.

- Renewal
I remember making my first mission statement in life after reading this book. It also discusses how to manage your time so that you make time for things you want to do, about effective communication and so much more.
I read this book 7 years ago. And I re-read it all the time.
I gifted the 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens written by Stephen Coveyâs son Sean Covey to my sister when she was a teenager. Thatâs how much I love this book.

Which Book to Read First?

Trust your gut to choose the very first book you need to read among this list. Sometimes your gut feelings help you choose the right books more than reviews.
Conclusion

Self-help books only work when you apply the concepts described in it. Otherwise, reading them is just a waste of time.
Also, self-help books should be read more than once, at least. Once to understand the concept, get an idea of the book and to decide if this is useful for you or not. If you found it useful read it once more so that the concepts become cemented and you will start using them in your life.
Now pick one, start reading, and let it do its job.
